In the area near the shore of Lake Mondsee near See and Scharfling, remains of settlements were found under water and a rich trove of evidence of Neolithic pottery and tools made of stone and bone were unearthed. They were interpreted as the remains of a pile-dwelling culture.

Science has coined the name Mondseekultur after the main finding place at the Mondsee. It is approximately limited with 2800 to 1800 B.C. and extends over the largest part of Upper Austria and parts of Salzburg. Recent research has shown that these were original land settlements that were later submerged by rising lake levels. The Mondseeland Museum has an extensive pile dwelling collection.

In Roman times there was a settlement here, as findings prove, and a road connected it with Juvavum, the Roman Salzburg. Around 600 the Bavarians began to settle the Mondseerland and cleared the forests. In 748, the Bavarian Duke Odilo from the Agilolfinger dynasty founded the Mondsee Monastery, which is thus the oldest monastery in Upper Austria. From then on, the development of this landscape was shaped by the monastery, both in spiritual-cultural and economic terms, and gave rise to a cultural landscape with its own characteristics.

Mondsee is a lake in the Upper Austrian Salzkammergut and is located southwest of Lake Attersee. Its entire surface belongs to the municipality of the same name. The southern shore forms the border between Upper Austria and the province of Salzburg and between the limestone Alps in the south and the sandstone zone. The Drachenwand, which rises on the southwestern shore, is also striking.
